Top 10 US Companies To Buy Right Now

Some people believe it's important to never let any stock position grow too large. While I understand that reasoning, I have no problem letting Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) stock continue to grow as a part of my portfolio. Currently, it's my largest personal position, accounting for 9% of all my real-life holdings.

There are two big reasons every investor should consider owning Amazon stock -- and two threats every investor needs to know about before buying in.

An equation for greatness
Wide moat + innovation = excellence. That represents the DNA of the world's greatest companies. By a wide moat, I mean that a company has sustainable competitive advantages that will make it nearly impossible for any serious competition to arise.

Amazon's moat comes from its laser focus on customer satisfaction. The company's network of fulfillment centers across North America, Europe, and China ensures that when you order something online, it will arrive at your doorstep just 48 hours later. Each of these centers costs billions to build, stock, and man.

Getty Images Holiday shopping season is in full swing, and smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices once again top many shoppers' gift lists. Given how expensive many popular gadgets have become, one big question many shoppers are facing is whether or not to tack on an extended warranty to protect themselves should their electronic devices come to harm. They're Lining Up to Sell You Protection Retailers know that the best time to get you to pay to protect expensive items is while you are making a big-ticket purchase. For years, Best Buy (BBY), Sears (SHLD), Walmart (WMT), and other major retailers have sold extended warranty protection on high-priced electronics like computers and TVs. That coverage can be pricey, with Walmart having recently charged $65 for a two-year TV service plan and Best Buy offering two-year coverage on an $800 TV for $99.99 and five-year coverage for $179.99 . Appliance warranties can also be expensive, with Sears recently charging $280 for a three-year protection plan on a $950 refrigerator. Protection plans for smartphones and tablets are also popular. Apple (AAPL) offers its AppleCare for its devices. Coverage to extend an iPhone's warranty and other protections for two years will run you $99. Other companies have sought to offer more comprehensive coverage for electronic devices, with Protect Your Bubble offering phone and tablet insurance for $7.99 to $9.99 a month that covers not only mechanical problems but also common mishaps like damage from drops and liquid spills, as well as theft or loss. Many Items Have Built-In Protection What many consumers don't realize is how much protection against common problems they already have, even without buying extra. Nearly every purchase comes with at least limited warranty protection for mechanical defects. According to Consumer Reports, most issues that would qualify for coverage under extended warranties tend to happen during the initial warranty period, making the extended co

Matt Sayles/AP Celebrities don't make the best financiers. Several years ago, a handful famous people jumped into the prepaid debit card business, only to find it wasn't quite the easy route to profits they might have believed it to be. Perhaps they were under that impression because, to coin an old phrase, the financial sector is where the money is. But succeeding in it can be much trickier than it looks. Fed by All Those Fees It's easy to understand why the prepaid card market would be appealing for someone looking for a good side business. In a word: fees. Using a prepaid card generates a raft of payouts for the customer. These can include activation fees, monthly subscription fees, loading fees, ATM withdrawal fees (not to mention ATM balance inquiry fees), customer service fees ... and on and on. How can card issuers tack on so many costs to a simple financial instrument? After all, a typical credit or debit card using the Visa (V) or MasterCard (MA) network carries few if any fees for the user. But prepaid cards are targeted towards a different kind of customer -- lower-income individuals, and those who can have a difficult time securing financial instruments (such as teenagers). Many of these folks lack the income or credit score for a traditional credit card and might not have the means to satisfy the requirements of a traditional bank account. In other words, since they have limited options, as a group these individuals are virtually a captive market for prepaid products. I'd Just Like an Autograph Instead, Thanks

It was from these humble beginnings that Visa (NYSE: V  ) was born. BankAmericard became an independent corporation in 1970 and later changed its name to Visa in 1976 as a way to broaden its appeal internationally. By this point the Master Charge had been established as a competing credit card network, and it had actually grown larger than the former BankAmericard: In the first quarter of 1976, BankAmericard/Visa claimed 31.8 million cardholders and $2.3 billion in sales volume, while the Master Charge had 37.4 million cardholders and processed $2.9 billion in sales. Master Charge, of course, is the forerunner to MasterCard (NYSE: MA  ) , but it hasn't maintained its early lead over Visa. In 2012, Visa's total U.S. purchase volume clocked in at $981 billion compared to $534 billion for MasterCard, and Visa's 278 million American cardholders far outweigh MasterCard's 180 million American cardholders.

It also remains worthwhile to hedge stock allocations to protect against any major downside event along the way. This includes positions with low correlations such as the PIMCO Total Return ETF (BOND) or the PIMCO Global Advantage Inflation Linked Bond ETF (ILB). This also includes allocations that are likely to rally sharply in the event of a stock pullback but can also continue to rise along with the market such as long-term Treasuries (TLT) or Build America Bonds (BAB). And despite the recent thrashing they have endured, the precious metals complex including gold (GLD), silver (SLV), platinum (PPLT) and palladium (PALL) continue to provide attractive long-term portfolio diversification benefits. I remain long all of these metals via the Central GoldTrust (GTU), the Central Fund of America (CEF), the Sprott Physical Silver Trust (PSLV) and the Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP).

Our preferred large-cap growth ETF is Vanguard Growth (VUG), which we feature in all four of our core Best Buys model portfolios. It has fairly broad coverage of growth stocks, with more than 350 holdings. Its expense ratio is a miniscule 0.10%.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some growth stocks to your portfolio but don't have the time or expertise to hand-pick a few, the Vanguard Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: VUG  ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.

    The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The Vanguard ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is a very low 0.10%.

This ETF aspires to beat the S&P 500 soundly, but over the past three and five years, it has slightly underperformed and outperformed it, respectively. As with most investments, of course, we can't expect outstanding performances in every quarter or year. Investors with conviction need to wait for their holdings to deliver.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Gary Gordon]

On behalf of most of my clients in 2013, I chose to overweight tech and health care. However, I did so with areas that are traditionally less volatile. I continue to own Powershares Pharmaceuticals (PJP) and/or SPDR Select Healthcare (XLV). I’ve been a proponent of “old tech” with the attractive prices and dividends; First Trust NASDAQ Tech Dividend (TDIV) fits the bill. Additionally, I have remained faithful to iShares Small Cap Value (IJS) for small-cap exposure, rather than hop on the IWO express.
