In last week Energy Letter, I discussed the one million barrel per day (bpd) milestone for North Dakota oil production, and provided a refresher on the geology and the players in North Dakota Williston Basin.
Another energy production milestone was recently announced by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), and it is just as amazing as North Dakota rise as a major oil producer. In an Aug. 5 report, the EIA noted that natural gas production in the Marcellus Formation has exceeded 15 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) for the first time. This amounts to nearly 23% of all US natural gas production, and some 40% of all US shale gas production.
Marcellus gas production has increased from 2 Bcf/d in 2010 to 15 Bcf/d today, and it is now the largest shale gas producing region in North America. In fact, the current 15 Bcf/d is equivalent to Canada average rate of production last year, and nearly three times Mexico.

Next on the list is French oil major Total SA (TOT). Total raised some eyebrows last month as discussions progressed to develop Russia massive shale fields in partnership with Lukoil (LUKOY). It appears that, despite the ongoing threat of sanctions from the United States, business is going on as usual in the real world.

To be fair, it might be years before PROP really starts to worry the likes of Denbury Resources and Halliburton Company. That doesn't dampen the size of the opportunity for Propell Technologies Group Inc. in the meantime, though. In fact, considering major oil players like Miller Energy Resources Inc. (NYSE:MILL), LUKOIL (OTCMKTS:LUKOY), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) have already utilized this plasma-boring service and liked the results, PROP may grow into a real threat to the sol-called "majors" before anyone realizes it's happening, ultimately spurring an acquisition of the company. When the provisionally-patented technology is this good, we can't rule out any rewarding outcome for the stock.

ConocoPhillips (COP) explores for, produces, transports, and markets crude oil, bitumen, natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and natural gas liquids on a worldwide basis. I am attracted to the above average yield on ConocoPhillips, in comparison to Exxon and Chevron. Unfortunately Chevron is already one of my highest weighted positions, which is why ConocoPhillips was the second US oil choice. I am building my position in the stock with this purchase. The company is extremely well run, has a history of disposing out of non-core assets such as Lukoil stock (LUKOY) and Kashagan Project, and sending cash to shareholders in the process. The company has increased dividends for 13 years in a row, and has managed to boost them by 15.10%/year over the past decade. Currently, the stock trades at 10.70 times earnings and yields 4.20%. AP/Chrysler NEW YORK -- Chrysler says it is recalling 651,000 Jeep and Dodge SUVs in the U.S. because vanity mirror lights that have undergone repairs can short circuit and start a fire if not reassembled correctly. The recall is for certain 2011 to 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango models. Chrysler says it has seen the problem only in lighted sun visor mirrors that have been repaired. But as a precaution, it says the recall applies to all of the vehicles. The automaker says it knows of three injuries caused by the lighted mirror. Chrysler will contact customers and let them know when they can have the problem fixed. The recall will total 895,000 SUVs around the world. About 45,000 are in Canada, 23,000 are in Mexico and 175,000 are outside North America. Separately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it's investigating steering problems in about 500,000 Ford cars. The investigation covers 2004 to 2007 Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Marauder models. NHTSA says a heat shield in the car can rust, dislodge and cause the steering shaft to jam. It has received 5 complaints about the issue and knows of one injury. In that case, the steering froze as a driver entered a high entrance ramp, causing the car to roll over and cause injuries. Ford Motor Co. says it will cooperate with the NHTSA on the investigation. Ford (F) shares rose 14 cents to $17.34 in morning trading Friday. Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images DETROIT -- General Motors (GM) reported a much lower second-quarter profit Thursday due to numerous recalls and the expected cost of at least $400 million for a compensation fund for those killed or injured by a defective ignition switch linked to at least 13 deaths. GM also reiterated that it expected a moderately improved operating profit this year and that its future recall costs would be slightly higher than historic rates. "We're on or ahead of the plan we shared in January," Chief Financial Officer Chuck Stevens told reporters. "Our expectation is that the second half of the year will be better than the first half." Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said strong vehicle pricing in North America "saves the quarter." GM earlier this year recalled 2.6 million cars for the faulty ignition switches, which can cause engine stalls and stop power steering and power brakes from operating and air bags from deploying. The company is under investigation by U.S. safety regulators, Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice over its failure to detect the problems for more than a decade. Net income in the quarter fell to $190 million, or 11 cents a share, from $1.2 billion, or 75 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items, GM earned 58 cents a share, just below the 59 cents analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S had expected. The company's shares fell 2.9 percent to $36.34 in morning trading. Also Thursday, GM's smaller U.S. rival, Ford Motor (F), posted a higher-than-expected profit on strong results in North America and Europe. One-time items for GM included the charge for establishing the victims' compensation fund, which the company said could still rise by about $200 million, as well as an $874 million charge for a change in how the company will account for recalls in the future. GM previously took charges as recalls occurred, but now it will account for potential future liabilities as the cars

Carlos Osorio/APVolkswagen executive Ulrich Hackenberg introducing the Volkswagen CrossBlue SUV at the Detroit auto show in January. NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Volkswagen plans to build a new seven-passenger SUV at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, adding about 2,000 factory jobs as it tries to reverse U.S. sales that have fallen for the past two years. The German automaker announced Monday that it will invest $600 million to expand the factory and set up a new research center that will employ about 200 engineers. The research facility will coordinate products for North America to quickly include customer feedback into planned and existing models, the company said. The announcement comes after months of political wrangling over the role of organized labor at the factory, which now employs about 1,500 workers and makes only one model, the Passat midsize car. Production of the new SUV, based on the CrossBlue concept vehicle unveiled in Detroit last year, is scheduled to start at the end of 2016. It gives VW an entry into an important segment of the U.S. market -- the family people hauler. VW sales fell almost 7 percent last year and are down more than 13 percent so far this year, largely because the company doesn't have competitive products in key market segments. VW had a big year in 2012, with sales rising 35 percent to more than 438,000. But sales fell to about 408,000 last year, and the brand sold only 179,000 through June this year. "The Volkswagen brand is going on the attack again in America," Martin Winterkorn, chairman of Volkswagen's management board, said in a statement, repeating the goal of selling 800,000 Volkswagen brand vehicles in the U.S. by 2018. Michael Horn, VW's CEO in America, said seven-passenger, three-row SUV sales in the U.S. have almost doubled since 2009 to 1.4 million a year. He also said the new engineering center will broaden VW's portfolio with more new products. The company plans to add about 538,000 square feet to the e
