On the company's Q1 earnings call on Tuesday, US Airways (NYSE: LCC ) CEO Doug Parker predicted massive dislocation for his company ��and the industry as a whole ��if FAA furloughs remain in place. The furloughs, brought on by the sequester, mean that all FAA workers must take one day off every two weeks through September. With reduced staffing levels, major airports have already seen unusual delays despite good weather throughout most of the U.S.
Surprisingly, despite Parker's dire warnings, investors seemed willing to shrug off the risks, sending US Airways shares up more than 4% on Tuesday. However, Parker's comments suggest that if the cuts remain in place, the airline industry could be in for a rough ride over the next several months.
The risk
On multiple occasions during the call, Parker highlighted the severity of the problem. US Airways estimates that over the course of a full year, the furlough would cause delays and cancellations that would cost it $250 million. If frequent delays and cancellations cause some customers to avoid flying altogether, that could increase the loss estimate. Considering that US Airways' adjusted profit last year was just $537 million, the potential impact is substantial.

Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company�� chief technology officer. Clearly, it�� still their company.
By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today�� AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.
That�� pretty typical in the world of net-nets.
Solitron
Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here ��and even though 70% of the company�� shares are not held by the CEO ��we��e still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren�� talking about a lot of tumult at the top.
In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.

Duke dominates large-scale energy production, but one threat could come from small-scale local generation. SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY ) and other players in the solar industry have realized that financing residential and small-scale commercial solar power installations could become a key to increased adoption of solar technology, and even Duke CEO Jim Rogers has noted that the move could make utility giants less important going forward. Moreover, with wholesale power provider NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG ) looking to bypass its utility customers and go directly to consumers with solar installations and natural gas generators, big changes in the industry could be coming and could put hundreds of billions of dollars of traditional utility investment at risk.
