On this day in economic and business history...
The DuPont (NYSE: DD ) gunpowder trust split into three companies on June 12, 1912. A year earlier, the courts had ruled against DuPont, imposing onerous terms that required the chemical concern to grant its new spinoffs the capabilities to produce fully half of all American black powder and at least 42% of its dynamite.
On the day of the planned spinoff, The Washington Post reported on DuPont's impressive scale, noting that the company's 1911 fiscal-year revenue came to nearly $40 million, of which government-sourced powder purchases comprised less than $3 million. All told, the DuPont trust manufactured 60% of the nation's explosives that year -- equal to about 150,000 tons. Another interesting Post tidbit:
It is estimated that transporting [the national output of explosives] annually manufactured 5,000 cars are continually in transit. How rarely one meets with an accident can be judged from the fact that in every 1,000 miles a passenger travels he passes 20 cars loaded with dynamite. In all your travels did you ever hear of a car loaded with dynamite exploding?

The real pain
The titanium dioxide business was the biggest drag for DuPont last year, as demand for the pigment, which is used primarily in paints, softened globally. This year has been encouraging so far, with most TiO2 producers witnessing an uptick in the demand for the pigment. While DuPont reported an 8% sequential rise in TiO2 sales volumes during its first quarter, Huntsman (NYSE: HUN ) saw its first-quarter TiO2 volumes rise 27%sequentially. Furthermore, Huntsman scaled down production during the quarter to reduce inventory, and feelsthat a better balance between demand and supply should help the industry bounce back during the second half of the year. - [By Monica Gerson]
Huntsman (NYSE: HUN) surged 8.05% to $20.68 in the pre-market session after the company announced its plans to buy Rockwood Holdings' (NYSE: ROC) Performance Additives and Titanium Dioxide businesses for $1.1 billion in cash.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Rich Duprey]
Canpotex, the cartel's rival North American potash marketing association, comprised of Mosaic (NYSE: MOS ) , PotashCorp (NYSE: POT ) , and Agrium (NYSE: AGU ) , is a major supplier of potash to Brazil, with some analysts estimating it owns 38% of the market. In years past, Latin America -- primarily the Brazilian market -- has comprised as much as 26% of Canpotex's potash sales.
- [By Ben Levisohn]
Stemming from the recent BPC fall-out, POT revised guidance reflects the acute market uncertainty and lingering turmoil battering global potash markets. Specifically, with potash prices moving sharply lower across most export regions, buyers seem intent on deferring purchases with the hope of securing lower prices and improved macro visibility in the future. Consistent with this view, we note that competing potash bellwethersMosaic (MOS) andAgrium (AGU) both recently lowered their 2013 global shipment forecasts.

The agriculture ETF is heavily weighted toward the U.S., with 45.8% of its assets there, but it is geographically diverse, with exposure to countries such as Canada (9.9%), Switzerland (8.5%), Japan (6.7%) and Singapore (5.1%).
Potash Cartel Breakup Has Weighed on This Agriculture ETF
The ETF’s unit price declined in the first half of 2013, partly because of the breakup of the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC), through which Russia’s Uralkali, the world’s No. 1 potash producer, and Belaruskali of Belarus distribute their potash. The market is dominated by BPC and Canpotex, owned by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT), Mosaic and Agrium Inc. (NYSE: AGU).
Together, the two cartels control 70% of global potash exports, so the breakup of BPC will result in a more fractured market, which seems likely to push potash prices lower. Shares of major potash producers fell sharply on the news, as did Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF due to its potash stock holdings, which include Agrium, Potash Corp. and Mosaic.
